The cover photograph on this page was taken at a film festival in 2018, outdoors, in hard midday sun, with aviator sunglasses covering the upper half of the face and a crowd blurred out behind. He is smiling broadly and the upper front teeth are clearly in shot. That is the whole of what the frame supports.
Hard overhead sunlight is a specific and unhelpful lighting condition for photographing teeth. It arrives from above, so the upper lip throws a shadow band across the top of the upper arch and the lower lip catches a bright edge. Contrast between the lit and shadowed parts of the same tooth can be greater than any difference between one tooth and its neighbour, which makes shade comparison meaningless in this frame. The original file is 679 pixels across, so the crop cannot be pushed further without inventing detail.
The glasses matter too, in a way that is easy to overlook. Removing the eyes from a portrait removes most of the cues a viewer normally uses to judge expression and, with it, the sense of how far the mouth is actually open. What is left is a smile read in isolation, which tends to be over-read.
The second frame, made while he was speaking at a public event in 2022, is a different kind of failure. Mid-speech photographs catch the mouth in transit: the lips are shaped by a consonant rather than by an expression, and the teeth appear at whatever angle that moment produced. Here the mouth is partly open and almost no dental surface is legible. Indoor lighting is even and diffuse, the exposure is balanced for a suit and a pale shirt, and the face is rendered accurately in every respect except the one this page would need.
Outdoor press photography at festivals is unusually consistent: bright sun, a long lens from a fixed pen, and subjects who know exactly where the cameras are. The pictures look alike because the conditions are alike, which is why the archives for any given year appear to show a single unchanging person. That consistency is a property of the press pen, not of the subject.
Indoor conference and briefing photography inverts every one of those variables. Light is soft and comes from broad ceiling sources; the photographer is close; the subject is talking rather than posing. Faces photographed this way tend to read as older and more tired than the same face on a red carpet an hour later. Neither rendering is the truth. They are two different measurement instruments producing two different readings.
The general question underneath this search term is what changes in a smile over decades and what is ordinarily done about it. Written without reference to any named person: the gum margin can recede and expose more of the tooth root, which is a periodontal question and is covered on the gum disease page. Enamel wears at the biting edges over time, and where the loss is significant a full-coverage restoration such as a porcelain crown rebuilds the shape. Comparison pieces about long careers rely on a particular sleight of hand: they place an early frame beside a recent one and let the reader supply the explanation. Over a span of decades almost everything in the photographic chain changes as well as the subject. Film stock gives way to sensors, colour rendering shifts, retouching norms tighten and then loosen again, and the archive itself is filtered by whichever frames were worth keeping. A reader looking at such a pair is comparing two technologies at least as much as two moments in a life.
The workable rule is narrow and dull. Treat a photograph as evidence about the conditions under which it was made. Treat a person's own recorded words as evidence about that person. Treat the rest as opinion.
