The cover photograph on this page is a 2026 studio portrait: plain grey seamless background, soft even light from the front, head square to the camera, and a closed-lip smile. No teeth are visible in it. The image is large — 1,862 pixels across the original file — and visibly finished, with the smooth, low-texture skin rendering that commercial retouching produces. It is a good portrait and a completely empty dental source.
Saying so matters, because the cover image is the picture most readers will see first and the one most likely to be reused elsewhere. Whatever a reader believes about this subject, the frame at the top of this page cannot support it in either direction.
The second frame is from 2019 and is a different class of object altogether: an outdoors shot under overcast sky, hood up, taken on consumer equipment and surviving at low resolution with visible compression. The mouth is slightly open and a small part of the upper arch is legible, softened by the compression enough that edges cannot be traced with any confidence. The frame is a reasonable record that he was in a particular place in a particular year, and a poor record of anything smaller than a face.
The usual argument about this subject sets a recent studio portrait beside an older low-resolution frame and treats the difference as a finding. It is not one. Those two images differ in almost every variable that affects how teeth appear: lens focal length, sensor size, lighting direction and quality, distance to subject, compression, sharpening and retouching. Holding none of those constant while varying all of them produces a difference every time, whatever the subject.
Compression deserves a specific mention because it is the dominant effect in the older frame. Video and heavily compressed stills discard fine detail in low-contrast areas first, and the boundaries between adjacent teeth are exactly that: low-contrast detail at small scale. A gap can be smoothed away by a codec, and a shadow between two teeth can be exaggerated into something that looks like a line. Neither artefact is in the mouth.
Modern portraiture for online use passes through a finishing stage as a matter of routine. Skin is evened out, contrast is lifted, and local sharpening is applied to the eyes and mouth because those are the areas viewers look at. On a closed-lip portrait that last step has no dental consequence, but on any open-mouth frame it directly changes how bright and how sharply defined the teeth appear.
Online video adds a further layer. Thumbnails are graded for saturation and contrast to survive being displayed at small size, and faces in them are frequently adjusted well beyond what the source footage contained. A thumbnail is a designed object, not a document, and it is the worst possible input to a comparison.
Read as a general query rather than a personal one, this search is asking what usually produces an even, bright smile on camera.
